Company and Role Overview

Smarter Grid Solutions is a pioneering technology company who spearheaded the introduction of Active Network Management in the UK, and is now a world-leading provider of DERMS software to electrical utilities across the UK, Europe and North America. We have a customer base that includes major utilities including UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution, Consolidated Edison, Hydro One and Southern California Edison and controls over 400 MW of renewable generation, from wind turbines to electric vehicles, across its customer territories.

Smarter Grid Solutions is seeking an Executive Sales and Business Development leader to accelerate the growth of the business across SGS’s core vertical markets (Utility DERMS, Fleet DERMS, and Microgrid DERMS) within North America.  The Executive leader will report to the EVP Go To Market, and will be responsible for delivering the top line number in North America.


The Executive for North America Sales and Business Development will be an experienced leader with a solid track record of leading sales teams and selling solutions into the energy space. 

The Executive for North America Sales will be an excellent relationship builder and inspirational leader; someone who will build strong relationships with customers, colleagues, direct reports, and all key SGS stakeholders.


Responsibilities and Objectives


  • Develop a plan to hit North America sales targets in all core verticals
  • Organise and lead selling resources to achieve success
  • Produce account plans to optimise opportunities within existing customers
  • Develop new business with new names for SGS
  • Identify optimal selling channels: direct, partner programmes, participation in consortium solutions, etc.
  • Work closely with SGS’s Executive team, as well as with role-relevant key individuals within SGS’s parent Company, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc.
  • Lead SGS’s response to public procurement processes: RFIs, RFPs, etc.
  • Deliver sales growth per plan
  • Own client relationships, and be accountable for customer satisfaction
  • CEO level relationship management and networking with industry leaders
  • Negotiate and close contracts
  • Follow market trends in core vertical markets, and provide internal feedback on market and product intelligence
  • Track competitor activity and provide feedback


Personal Attributes, Required Experience and Capabilities


  • Extensive experience in consultative selling, at a senior level in a business to business environment within the energy sector
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a countrywide sales team, within the energy sector
  • Well respected individual within the energy sector, with a strong network
  • Highly organised, capable of developing and implementing plans with velocity and agility
  • Motivational, inspirational, proactive leadership style; capable of getting the best out of self and salesforce
  • Demonstrable experience of owning and developing exceptionally strong customer relationships, and owning customer satisfaction from prospecting to final deliver
  • Exceptional presentation skills: commanding presence, as well as presentation of visual and written materials
  • Strong commercial acumen, capable of contributing at a strategic level
  • Capable of identifying new market opportunities with the further ability to evaluate ways of exploiting opportunities to the benefit of SGS

Competitive basic salary + annual company performance bonus
