Problem

SSEN required major grid upgrades (~£30m) to connect new DER customers. The DER fed multiple simultaneous constraints across the 11 kV and 33 kV network.

Solution

Strata Grid was deployed for real-time constraint management. The autonomous fast-acting control minimised curtailment releasing over 25 MW of additional hosting capacity.

Result

24 renewable distributed generators totaling 39 MW are controlled resulting in 120% of local electricity demand now being met annually by renewables. SSEN saved £30 million by avoiding the need for a subsea cable.
