Problem

Western Power Distribution (WPD) operates the largest geographical area of any Distribution Utility in the UK. Their service territory spans the South West of England into Wales and the Midlands. WPD, like many UK Distribution Utilities, has connected record volumes of DER, mainly PV, to its network. To connect any more DER requires very substantial upgrades to large parts of the network. The cost and delay to implement was becoming a barrier to further DER development.

Solution

WPD has entered into an Enterprise Licence with SGS allowing Strata Grid to be rolled out across a number of Grid Supply Points (GSPs) as required.

Result

There are currently 7 actively managed GSPs with the remainder of the network being enabled by 2021.
