Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

Virtual Power Plant solution from Smarter Grid Solutions

Our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) solution for DER owners, operators and aggregators provides the necessary platform to build, operate and deliver value from growing fleets of owned and operated clean energy and flexibility assets.

Our solutions are built on our Cirrus Flex product and provide the necessary interfaces to energy and services markets, energy and economic optimization, trading interfaces and features for carbon management.  This enables our customers to grow their low-carbon energy asset fleets and deliver new business models and value streams.

Problem

As the energy system continues to transition to cleaner and more decentralized sources, there is a growing need to harness the flexibility available in DER that would be traditionally overlooked by markets with minimum capacity thresholds. Meanwhile, fleet operators face tough challenges managing dispatch on an asset-by-asset basis, and require aggregated management to ease their operations.

Solutions are required that can aggregate individual DER and represent them as a single tradeable entity: the Virtual Power Plant (VPP).  To now, most VPP solutions are tightly coupled to specific market access for a specific technology. As the energy system transitions, management of mixed asset portfolios in dynamic VPP groups is essential to unlock and deliver value.

Solution

Cirrus Flex allows diverse sets of DER to be organised into different portfolios. Data from the DER can be aggregated across a portfolio - allowing it to be streamed to optimizers, analytics providers and markets as if it was one virtual asset - a virtual power plant (VPP). When dispatched, Cirrus Flex will optimally allocate instructions to each DER in a portfolio - ensuring that the overall objective for the VPP is achieved at the lowest cost or carbon to the customer.

All of this can be achieved agnostic to DER type, model or manufacturer - with Cirrus Flex containing a digital twin representation of the device allowing it to understand and accommodate the various capabilities and characteristics of the DER in the portfolio.
